They say leadership skill can benefit you a lot both in your academic and personal life. These skills, however, can be hard to build. Of course, many of us would want their opinion to matter, especially in their academic group – but they hardly know how to achieve it at the same time.

Don’t worry, today I’m going to offer you 10 tips that can help you become a leader you always wanted to be.

1. Don’t be afraid to risk.

This is one of the most important things for both existing and future leaders: to be able to make risky decisions. Some avoid doing so, being too afraid to fail – however, failures are inevitable. Taking a risk won’t make you look bad – it will show that you are able to take responsibility for what might come next.

2. Be an inspiration.

A good leader doesn’t force the group to accept their point of view. On the contrary, they allow the group to question their decisions, encourage discussions, and are always there to inspire the ones who suffer from lack of motivation and ideas.

3. Have your own vision.

Academic knowledge is one thing and your own vision is completely another. It’s the vision that allows you to generate new ideas, offer interesting approaches, and stand out among other people. A good leader must have their own vision: this will help set a certain goal and move towards it.

4. Judge fairly.

No matter how friendly and cooperative your group is, the conflicts might still happen from time to time. Being a leader, you shouldn’t step away from them, letting the others handle it – you have to deliver your own judgment when it’s appropriate. However, you must always judge fairly at the same time. If you show that you treat some people better than the others, you will lose your authority.

5. Be an example.

Being a leader is not only a great honor but also a great responsibility. You have to be an example to your group, maintaining both your grades and your skills at a good level and sharing your experience with the rest of the group.

6. Be curious.

I’ve already mentioned that a good leader has to offer something besides their knowledge. Curiosity can help you do that: always look for new opportunities and ideas and don’t limit yourself to things your school or college offers.

7. Be persuasive.

It’s not the smartest people who become academic leaders – it’s the most persuasive ones. When you are able to defend your point of view well and persuade others to do something, your authority in your group grows. However, that’s not the only perk of it: persuasion also allows you to minimize conflicts inside the group, solving them quicker and easier.

8. Strengthen your skills.

Academic skills matter, but other skills are also very important when it comes to leadership. You have to work hard to maintain your authority, strengthening not only your grades but your leadership and organizational skills. After all, becoming a leader is just the beginning of the whole process: you have to learn how to organize your group, how to manage tasks successfully, and so on. Never stop strengthening such skills, as they will help you not only within your group but in your life in general too.

9. Communicate with people.

There are different types of leaders: some keep the distance between them and the people around them, while the others work hard to build more personal connections. When it comes to academic group, connection and communication are very important. You have to organize the rest of the group effectively, to help them with their problems, and to solve their conflicts – and you have to gain their trust in order to do so.

That’s why your goal here is to establish effective communication with the rest of your group. Show them that you care about them and that you are interested in their lives – and see how much it will affect the whole working process.

10. Don’t get arrogant.

Sometimes the leadership gets in the head, especially when the leader is still young. Don’t let it be your case. Always remember that you are a student too, just like the rest of the group. You have the same problems and the same mindset as them and you can lose your authority just as easy as you’ve gained it.
