Blogger vs WordPress – Which One Is The Best?
Do you want to know which blogging platform is best for your requirements? A blogger vs. WordPress article? You are in the right place!
This has been a long-time controversial question. Which one is the best? WordPress or Blogger. Let’s take part in the contentious argument in this post.
What Are WordPress and Blogger?
I will explain them in simple words for all beginners unaware of WordPress and Blogger. Both WordPress and Blogger are blogging platforms. Blogger belongs to Google. WordPress is open-source software.
Let’s check out some key features of WordPress and Blogger.
WordPress
WordPress is generally software that can be installed on a server. You can download this software here. Once you download the software, you will have to install it on a server. It is challenging to maintain a server. Hence, people prefer installing WordPress on web hosting.
There are many web hosting companies like Namecheap, HostGator, Bluehost, etc. But we always recommend Cloudways for hosting your website. We are proudly hosting our website at Cloudways.
WordPress also comes with a hosted version made by Automattic. It’s called WordPress.com.
Nearly 28% of the total websites in the world run on WordPress. Throughout this post, WordPress I use deals with WordPress.org ( Software ) and not with WordPress.com.
Blogger
Blogger is created by Google, and that’s why many people use Blogger. This makes it easier to get approved by Google AdSense. In addition, it gives you an easier integration with Google+.
OnlineRockersHub was initially at Blogger. Could you believe it?
Yes, the subdomain is still working. You can check it out www.onlinerockerswix.blogspot.in. I migrated from Blogger to WordPress for various reasons, which I will cover up in this post.
Let’s Start Comparing
These are some key features to be considered at Blogger and WordPress. Now, let’s get into the feature comparison. In this article, we will compare the following features:
- Security
- Widgets and Plugins
- SEO
- AdSense
- Social Media
- Comments
- Expense
- Ownership
- Support
- Multi-author
- Downtime
- Portability
- Future Products and Updates
Etc.
Security
This is because WordPress sites have been easily hacked. The reason behind this is that the admins of the website don’t configure their sites for security. You need to use specific plugins like Wordfence, Loginizer, iThemes Security, etc.
When it comes to Security, Blogger is the best ever. This is because the blogger’s account syncs with the blogger’s Gmail account.
You can have two-factor authentication also, thus making your blog/website more secure.
Google has nailed it when it comes to security.
Widgets and Plugins
Blogger is basically an HTML site. It gives you the full rights to edit the HTML of your site.
But, it becomes problematic when you wanted to have advanced functions on your site. Blogger does have some widgets, but they are also limited to their operations.
Blogger does not have plugin features.
WordPress plugins make everything automatic. You can use any number of plugins. If you are a developer, you can even create a site-specific plugin.
WordPress has more than 50,000 free plugins in its repository. In addition to this, you can also purchase plugins from marketplaces like CodeCanyon, MyThemesShop, etc., and upload them to your site.
With these WordPress plugins, creating your eCommerce store or paid search company, or marketing agency is possible.
SEO
Blogger is a simple HTML site. It does not have many SEO features, like the featured image, difference excerpts, featured image for social media, readability test, keyword density checker, etc.
It’s difficult to optimize your site for Search Engine at Blogger.
WordPress, by default, solves many Search Engine related issues for your website. It does have a featured image facility, custom excerpts, etc. Apart from that, you can check Keyword density, readability, etc., by installing the Yoast SEO Plugin.
Google Adsense
Google Adsense is a big reason for beginners choosing Blogger. Because it is comparatively easier to get a Google Adsense approval with Blogger. Since Blogger is a hosted platform, you will be getting a hosted Google Adsense account. If you need help with Google Adsense, this eBook will be helpful for you.
Getting an AdSense with WordPress is not an easy task. This is because Google has laid down strict rules.
Why so many strict rules?
As years went on, many people started applying Adsense account with the low-quality website. But, Google wants to keep up with its quality. Only then can it maintain its reputation. So, Google has brought many restrictions.
Unlike Blogger, WordPress sites are hosted on different hosting platforms. So, you will have to get an Upgraded account of AdSense to use with WordPress.
Social Media
Configuring your blogger blog to social media services like the Twitter card and Facebook Open Graph is a tedious task. Sometimes your blog images look awkward on social media. This is because of the difficulty in configuring Facebook Open Graph and Twitter Open Card. Google+ is the only social media that easily integrates with blogger.
With the Yoast SEO plugin, you have complete control over social media. Configuring Twitter Card and Facebook Open Graph is a cakewalk.
Comments
On Blogger, you can choose only on these two commenting systems:
- Blogger commenting system and
- Google+ commenting system.
You have the advantage of using the Google+ Commenting system because your comments will get integrated with Google+. This integration with Google+ can boost your SEO.
WordPress has impressive comment features, unlike Blogger. This is because of the wide variety of commenting systems available for WordPress. For example, you can use the Disqus commenting system, Simile-based comment system called Vicomi, Google+ commenting system, Facebook commenting system, default WordPress commenting system or WPDiscuz, etc.
Expenses
Blogger is completely free. It is free forever. Blogger websites will come with a subdomain by default. Hence, you don’t have to spend on domains. However, if you wish, you can point your subdomain to a custom domain.
WordPress is a little expensive. WordPress will not come with a subdomain. So you will have to spend on the custom domain, hosting, etc. And if you wish to use a premium theme or premium plugins, you will have to pay more. I recommend you to get good hosting packing from one of the following hosting providers:
Ownership
You heard it right. You are not the owner of your site. Google owns your website. When Google finds that you have violated any of their rules, Google will delete your website from any prior notification. So, you can’t trust bloggers when it comes to ownership. Here is a sad story where Google Killed an artist’s 14 years of work.
With blogger website, you do not own your website.
You own your WordPress site. So, whatever happens, you own your website. This advantage had caused a lot of people to move from Blogger to WordPress site.
Support
Blogger has a Product forum. Unfortunately, the support system is limited. Only a few experts are available on the platform, and they reply to your query only once a day because of the vast number of queries they receive. Moreover, you cannot even send an email to any of them if you need instant support.
Blogger’s support system is an outdated one.
The powerful WordPress is an Open Source software, and WordPress has been powered by thousands of plugins and themes. And each of them has its own support forum. The support forum is so active that the developers try to help you out as much as possible.
Multi-Author
Blogger offers two types of accounts.
- One is the admin, and
- the other is the author.
Blogger has a limitation that only 100 authors will be allowed for a website. And moreover, these authors can publish without the admin’s permission. So, this is dangerous. If your authors are angry at you, they can publish malicious content and make your website violate Google’s Rules. Hence, it may even result in your website getting banned.
Blogger is risky when your website contains many authors.
Unlike Blogger, WordPress offers various accounts like a contributor, editor, admin, subscriber, etc. You can provide contributor accounts for your authors, and hence you will have the rights to take the decision whether a particular post can be published on your website or not. And, there is no limitation on the number of authors on your website.
WordPress is the best for multi-author websites.
Downtime
Some of the WordPress sites go down often. This happens because they host on a server not suitable for their site.
That’s why I recommend you to get a hosting package from any of the following services because their servers are maintained well with excellent resources.
Blogspot subdomains are hosted on Google’s server, which has high-quality maintenance. Hence, downtime is rare.
You can check your website’s uptime using a dedicated tool like UptimeRobot.
Portability
Migrating from Blogger to any other platform is a difficult task. Sometimes, while relocating, you may even lose your SEO. This can lead to a loss of traffic. This is because the permalink structure in Blogger and other platforms varies.
Migrating from WordPress to any other platform is so easy. This is because of the flexibility in changing the permalink.
WordPress is portable and you can move it to any platform you want.
Future Products and Updates
Blogger platform is updated rarely. One of its services is Feedburner. It was updated over a decade ago. Anyone who wishes that their website should last long will not choose Blogger.
WordPress is updated often. They have constantly been updating their services based on users’ responses. Also, their plugins and themes are updated regularly. Hence, you can expect your website with splendid features in the upcoming years.
The following table will quickly summarize this comparison.

Personal Experience
I started OnlineRockersHub at Blogger. The only reason I jumped at Blogger is that it is free. At some point, I realized that I did not have any control over the SEO, and it was a little tedious to maintain with it. I was unaware of whether my links were broken or not. I had edited my HTML sometimes, and I always had confusion, whether the code is correct.
And also, getting traffic at Blogger is not an easy task. Blogger dashboard shows that the page view of a particular day is around 100 and Google Analytics shows that the number of page views was only 30. So, I decided to move on to WordPress. Unfortunately, Blogger stats counted even the bots’ visits, and it really frustrates.
Ever since I moved to WordPress, I was thrilled with the availability of so many features. I can install as many plugins as I want. I had complete control over the SEO. After moving to WordPress and using the Yoast SEO plugin, I realized that most of my content at Blogger did not satisfy the basic SEO requirements.
Yoast showed red signals for most of my posts. So I had to further edit those contents and make them search engine friendly. Also, I had complete control over the sitemaps. I could choose which post or page should be indexed and which one not. And one more thing is that the site stats synced with Google Analytics. WordPress did not count bot visits, and it made me easy to analyze my website.
I compared and realized that my blog is placed in higher positions in Search Engine while I am on WordPress than in Blogger. So, for me, WordPress is excellent.
Conclusion
From the above comparisons of Blogger vs WordPress, it is very well clear that. WordPress defeats Blogger in this battle. But that’s not over. This applies only to professional bloggers and business websites.
If you are a beginner and half-minded, whether you want to start a blog or not? Will blogging suit you? I will suggest you go with Blogger. Blogger is not too bad. It is a completely free platform. You need not waste your money by buying hosting and domain for a career, which doesn’t suit you. You could try blogger, realize whether blogging suits you and then move on to WordPress if you are serious about blogging.
